Instagram Instants launched globally on May 13, 2026. It is a disappearing photo feature built into your DM inbox — no filters, no camera roll uploads, no editing. Just tap the shutter and the photo goes to your Close Friends or mutual followers. This guide walks you through every part of it, from sending your first Instant to managing your archive.
Before You Start — One Thing to Know
Instagram Instants has one design choice that trips people up every time. If you want a broader overview first, read what Instagram Instants is. The moment you tap the shutter button, your photo is sent. There is no preview screen. There is no confirmation. It fires immediately to everyone on your selected audience list.
Read this guide before you open the Instants camera for the first time. It takes two minutes and will save you from accidentally sending a photo to hundreds of people.
⚠️ Important: The default audience is Friends — all your mutual followers. Always check the toggle below the shutter before taking a photo. Switch it to Close Friends if you want a smaller, more trusted audience.
How to Find Instagram Instants
Instants does not appear on your main feed or your profile. It lives inside your DM inbox.
- Open Instagram and tap the paper plane icon in the top right, or swipe left from your feed
- Look at the bottom right corner of your inbox
- You will see a small stack of photos — that is the Instants entry point
- Tap it to open the Instants camera
If you do not see the photo stack, your app may need an update. Go to the App Store or Google Play, update Instagram to the latest version, then sign out and sign back in.
💡 First time only: The first time you tap the Instants stack, Instagram shows a brief tutorial explaining how the feature works. Read it before proceeding to the camera.
How to Send an Instagram Instant
Sending an Instant is fast — intentionally. Here is the full process.
1Open the Instants camera
Tap the photo stack in the bottom right of your DM inbox. The camera opens directly after your first visit.
2Choose your audience
Look at the toggle below the shutter button. It shows either "Friends" or "Close Friends." Friends means all your mutual followers. Close Friends is your curated list. Tap the toggle to switch between them before you take the photo.
3Add a caption (optional)
Unlike Stories, the caption on Instants is written before you take the photo, not after. Tap the text area above the shutter if you want to add one. Keep it short — this is meant to feel casual.
4Tap the shutter
One tap takes and sends the photo simultaneously. There is no separate send button. The photo goes immediately to your selected audience. You cannot edit it, apply a filter, or review it before it sends.
5Use Undo if needed
An Undo button appears for a few seconds below the shutter immediately after sending. Tap it fast to retract the photo before anyone opens it. This window closes quickly — act within a second or two.
💡 Pro tip: Switch your audience to Close Friends before opening the camera. Once the camera is open, it is easy to forget to check the toggle and end up sending to your full Friends list by default.
How to View Someone Else's Instagram Instant
When someone sends you an Instant, you will receive a notification and see it appear in the Instants stack in your DM inbox.
- Open your DM inbox
- Tap the Instants stack in the bottom right corner
- Instants appear one at a time — tap to open and view each one
- Once you open it, the photo is visible for as long as you hold the screen
- When you release or navigate away, the photo disappears permanently
You cannot reopen an Instant once you have viewed it. If you close it accidentally before seeing it properly, it is gone.
ℹ️ No screenshot: Instagram blocks screenshots on Instants. If you try to capture the screen while viewing an Instant, the photo will not be captured. Someone could photograph their screen with another device, but in-app screenshot blocking is active.
How to React or Reply to an Instagram Instant
While viewing an Instant, you can react or reply without the photo disappearing.
- React with an emoji — Tap any emoji while the Instant is visible. Your reaction is sent to the sender's DM inbox immediately
- Send a text reply — Tap the reply field at the bottom while viewing. Type your message and send. It lands in the sender's regular DM thread with you
Replies and reactions are the only way to let someone know you saw their Instant. There is no viewers list on Instants, so if you want the sender to know you engaged, a reaction is the quickest signal.
How to Manage Your Instants Archive
Every Instant you send is saved in a private archive. Only you can see it. Recipients never have access to your archive.
- Open the Instants camera
- Tap the four-box icon in the top right corner
- Your archive opens, showing all Instants you have sent
- Tap any Instant to view it
- Tap and hold to get the option to delete it
Deleting an Instant from your archive unsends it to anyone who has not yet opened it. If a recipient already viewed it, deleting from your archive has no effect on their end — but the photo has already disappeared from their screen anyway.
Your archive stores Instants for up to one year.
How to Create a Story Recap from Your Instants
Instants stay private by default. But you can choose to compile them into a recap and share it to your Stories, where your normal audience can see it.
- Open your Instants archive (four-box icon in camera view)
- Select the Instants you want to include
- Tap Share as Recap
- The recap goes to your Stories like any other Story post
Once posted to Stories, normal Story rules apply — it stays visible for 24 hours and the viewers list shows who watched it.
Tips for Using Instagram Instants Well
- Always check the audience toggle first. Friends is the default. If you have a large mutual followers list, switch to Close Friends before every single Instant until it becomes habit
- The caption goes before the photo. Unlike every other Instagram format, you write text before tapping the shutter. If you want a caption, add it first
- Use it for genuine moments. The feature is built for unfiltered, in-the-moment content. Trying to stage a photo for Instants defeats the purpose and the result will look off
- Undo is your safety net. If you missed the Undo window, check our guide on how to delete an Instagram Instant for the next steps. The button disappears fast, but it is there. If you send something by mistake, tap Undo immediately — within one or two seconds of sending
- Build your Close Friends list first. Before using Instants regularly, take five minutes to curate your Close Friends list. It will make the feature far less stressful to use
What to Do If Instagram Instants Is Not Showing
If you cannot see the Instants stack in your inbox, here are the most common fixes.
- Update the app — Instants requires the latest version of Instagram. Check the App Store or Google Play for updates
- Sign out and back in — Sometimes the feature rolls out after a fresh login. Sign out from your profile settings and sign back in
- Check Content Preferences — Go to Profile → Settings → Content Preferences. Make sure Hide Instants in Inbox is toggled off. If it is on, Instants will not appear in your inbox
- Wait a day or two — Meta often rolls features in waves. Even with a global launch, some accounts receive it slightly later than others

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I send an Instant to one specific person? ▼
Not directly. Instants sends to either your entire Friends list (mutual followers) or your Close Friends list. There is no option to select individual recipients. To send to one person, add only that person to your Close Friends list and send to Close Friends.
Can I send multiple Instants in a row? ▼
Yes. There is no limit on how many Instants you can send. Each one is a separate photo that recipients view individually. You can send as many as you want throughout the day.
What happens if someone does not open my Instant? ▼
Instants that are not opened expire automatically after 24 hours. The recipient will no longer be able to view it after that window. You will not receive any notification about whether they opened it or not.
Can I use the front camera for Instants? ▼
Yes. When the Instants camera is open, tap the camera flip icon to switch between front and rear camera, just like you would in any other camera mode on Instagram.
Does Instagram Instants work on both iPhone and Android? ▼
Yes. Instants is available on both iOS and Android. The interface and steps are identical on both platforms. Make sure your app is updated to the latest version on either device.
Can I turn off Instagram Instants if I do not want it? ▼
Yes. Go to Profile → Settings → Content Preferences → Hide Instants in Inbox and toggle it on. This removes Instants from your inbox completely. For a full guide with three different methods, read our article on how to turn off Instagram Instants.
