Sent an Instagram Instant by accident? Want to clear your archive or remove the feature from your inbox? This guide covers every deletion method available â from the Undo button that works in seconds to deleting from your archive, clearing all sent Instants, and hiding the feature entirely.
The Three Things You Can Delete
People searching "how to delete Instagram Instants" usually mean one of three different things. If you are not sure what the feature is yet, start with our guide on what Instagram Instants is. It helps to know which one you need before you start.
- Unsend a specific Instant â You sent one and want to retract it before anyone opens it
- Delete from your archive â Remove a sent Instant from your private archive history
- Remove Instants from your inbox â Hide or disable the feature entirely so it stops appearing in your DMs
All three are possible. The steps are different for each. Here is how to do all of them.
Method 1 â Unsend an Instant Using the Undo Button
This is the fastest method and the only one that works before a recipient opens your photo. You have a very short window â act immediately after sending.
1Send your Instant
Tap the shutter button. The photo is sent immediately.
2Look for the Undo button
Immediately after sending, an Undo button appears just below the shutter button on screen. It is visible for only a few seconds.
3Tap Undo immediately
Tap it within one or two seconds. The Instant is retracted before any recipient can open it. If the button has disappeared, you need to use Method 2 instead.
â ī¸ Time-sensitive: The Undo button disappears within seconds. If you miss it, the only remaining option is deleting from your archive â which only works for recipients who have not yet opened the photo.
Method 2 â Delete an Instant from Your Archive
If you missed the Undo window, you can still delete the Instant from your private archive. This unsends it to anyone who has not opened it yet.
1Open the Instants camera
Tap the Instants photo stack in the bottom right corner of your DM inbox.
2Open your archive
Tap the four-box icon in the top right corner of the camera view. Your private archive opens showing all Instants you have sent.
3Find the Instant you want to delete
Scroll through your archive to find the specific photo you want to remove.
4Tap and hold to delete
Press and hold on the Instant. A delete option appears. Tap Delete to confirm. The Instant is removed from your archive and unsent to anyone who has not yet opened it.
âšī¸ Important limit: Deleting from archive only unsends to recipients who have NOT yet opened the photo. If someone already viewed the Instant, it has already disappeared from their screen automatically. Deleting your archive copy has no additional effect on their end.
Method 3 â Clear Your Entire Instants Archive
Want to wipe your full Instants history? You can delete all sent Instants from your archive at once.
- Open the Instants camera from your DM inbox
- Tap the four-box icon in the top right to open your archive
- Tap the three-dot menu or settings icon
- Select Delete All or Clear Archive
- Confirm the deletion
This removes all Instants from your private archive. For any that have not been opened by recipients, it also unsends them. Your archive is only visible to you, so clearing it has no visible effect on anyone else's experience.
đĄ Note: Instagram stores your Instants archive for up to one year. Clearing it removes everything permanently. There is no way to recover deleted Instants.
Method 4 â Remove Instants from Your Inbox Completely
Want to understand all your options for managing the feature? Read our full guide on how to turn off Instagram Instants. If you want to delete the Instants feature from your inbox entirely â not just one photo, but the whole thing â this is how to do it.
1Go to your Profile
Tap your profile photo in the bottom right corner of Instagram.
2Open Settings
Tap the three-line menu (â°) in the top right corner, then tap Settings.
3Go to Content Preferences
Scroll down and tap Content Preferences.
4Toggle on Hide Instants in Inbox
Find the Hide Instants in Inbox option and switch it on. The Instants section disappears from your inbox immediately. You will no longer see the feature or receive any Instants from others.
This does not delete your existing archive. Your sent Instants remain saved privately. It simply removes the Instants entry point from your inbox so you stop seeing it.

Delete vs Disable â What Is the Difference?
People often confuse deleting and disabling when it comes to Instants. If you want to learn how to use the feature before deciding whether to delete, read how to use Instagram Instants. Here is the clear distinction.
- Deleting an Instant â Removes a specific photo from your archive and unsends it to recipients who have not opened it. Does not affect the feature itself.
- Disabling Instants â Hides the entire feature from your inbox. You stop seeing and receiving Instants. Does not delete your archive.
- Both together â Delete your archive first, then disable the feature. This gives you the cleanest break from Instants.
What Happens to Recipients When You Delete an Instant?
This is the question most people actually want answered. Here is exactly what happens.
- If they have not opened it yet â Deleting from your archive unsends the Instant. It disappears from their inbox before they see it.
- If they have already opened it â The photo has already vanished from their screen the moment they viewed it. There is nothing left to delete on their end. Deleting from your archive has no additional effect.
- If it expired (24 hours passed) â The Instant is already gone from both sides. Deleting from your archive just removes your personal copy.
đĄ Good news: Because Instants disappear after viewing, even if someone saw your photo before you could delete it, the photo is already gone from their end. There is no permanent copy on their device from within the app.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I delete an Instagram Instant after someone has already seen it? âŧ
If they already viewed it, the photo disappeared from their screen automatically the moment they opened it. You can still delete it from your archive, but this has no effect on the recipient since the photo is already gone from their side.
Does deleting an Instant notify the recipient? âŧ
No. Instagram does not send any notification to a recipient when you delete or unsend an Instant. If they have not opened it yet, it simply disappears from their inbox without any explanation.
How long do I have to use the Undo button? âŧ
The Undo button appears for only a few seconds immediately after sending â roughly two to three seconds. After that it disappears and you need to use the archive deletion method instead.
Can someone save my Instagram Instant before I delete it? âŧ
Instagram blocks screenshots within the app on Instants, so they cannot capture it through the app. However, someone could photograph their screen with another device. In-app deletion works reliably for anyone who has not yet opened the photo.
Will my archive be deleted if I turn off Instants? âŧ
No. Hiding Instants in your inbox through Content Preferences does not delete your archive. Your sent Instants remain saved privately for up to one year. You need to manually delete them from the archive if you want them gone.
What is the difference between deleting and disabling Instagram Instants? âŧ
Deleting removes specific photos from your archive and unsends them to recipients who have not opened them yet. Disabling hides the entire Instants feature from your inbox so you stop seeing and receiving them. They are separate actions and do not affect each other.
