Instants is Instagram's new disappearing photo feature. It lives in the bottom right corner of your DM inbox and lets you share raw, unedited photos with your Close Friends or mutual followers. Photos vanish after the recipient views them and expire completely after 24 hours.
The core issue is the auto-send mechanic. The moment you tap the shutter button, your photo is sent to everyone on your Friends list. There is no review step. That design caught a lot of users off guard — and many sent photos they never intended to share.
The backlash was fast and loud. Three things drove it.
First, accidental sends. The onboarding screen explains that photos disappear — but it does not clearly warn you that tapping the shutter fires immediately to all Friends. Plenty of people found that out the hard way.
Second, the mismatch with how Instagram works. The platform has always been built around curated content — picking the right filter, tweaking the caption, deciding who sees what. Instants flips that completely. For many people, the feature simply does not fit how they use the app.
Third, privacy. Parents of teenagers, professionals with large follower counts, and people who are careful about what they share online all have legitimate reasons to opt out.
The good news is turning it off is straightforward. Pick the method that fits what you need.
This is the permanent option. It removes Instants from your inbox entirely. You will not see the feature, and you will not receive any Instants from other people.
Tap your profile photo in the bottom right corner of Instagram to go to your profile page.
Tap the three-line menu (☰) in the top right corner of your profile, then tap Settings.
Scroll down until you find Content Preferences and tap it.
Find the Hide Instants in Inbox option and switch it on. The Instants section disappears from your inbox immediately.
Not ready to fully disable it? This method hides Instants from your inbox view without switching the feature off completely. It is a good option if you want a break rather than a permanent exit.
The Instants section slides away and stops showing in your inbox. To bring it back, swipe left on the same area.
This does not turn off the feature globally. You can still send Instants if you want to. It simply clears the inbox clutter temporarily.
Maybe you want to keep using Instants but you are tired of the constant notification pings every time someone sends one. This method keeps the feature active while cutting the noise.
You can still send and receive Instants. You just will not be interrupted every time one arrives.
Sent one by accident? You have two options depending on how quickly you catch it.
The moment a photo sends, an Undo button appears just below the shutter. Tap it immediately and the photo is retracted before any recipient opens it. This window closes fast, so act quickly.
If you missed the Undo window, there is still a chance to unsend it — as long as no one has opened it yet.
Deleting from the archive unsends the Instant to anyone who has not yet opened it. If someone already viewed it, the photo is gone from their screen — but they have already seen it.
No. Hiding or disabling Instants has zero effect on the rest of your Instagram experience. And if you want to learn how to use the feature properly before deciding, check out our guide on how to use Instagram Instants. Your Stories, DMs, feed posts, Reels, and account settings all work exactly as before.
The only change is that the Instants section disappears from your inbox and you stop receiving disappearing photos from others. Everything else stays the same.

No. Any Instants you have already sent are saved in your archive for up to a year. Hiding the feature just stops new ones from appearing in your inbox. Your existing archive is not affected.
They can try, but you will not see them. Once you toggle Hide Instants in Inbox, the feature is completely hidden on your end and no incoming Instants will appear.
Before you tap the shutter, switch the toggle from Friends to Close Friends. That limits who receives it. But the instant-send mechanic remains — it still fires immediately, just to a smaller audience.
Possibly. Instagram has a history of re-enabling features after updates. If Instants reappears in your inbox after an update, go back to Profile → Settings → Content Preferences and toggle Hide Instants in Inbox on again.
No. Instagram blocks screenshots on Instants. Recipients cannot capture the photo through the app. However, someone could photograph their screen with another device, so treat Instants as you would any other private content.
